The coldest air the region has seen in three years is moving in for Tuesday. StormTeam 5 Meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon said 20 mph wind gusts will drop the wind chills to 15 to 20 degrees below zero. “This will be the coldest air we have seen in a few years. The unfortunate part is that it comes with harsh, biting wind, meaning the wind chill will be getting down to dangerous levels,” Fitzgibbon said. Fitzgibbon said Boston may flirt with a record cold high temperature of 12 degrees on Tuesday. The cold can cause frostbite in 30 minutes on exposed skin, Fitzgibbon said. Pets should also be taken inside. “When it is 15 to 20 degrees below zero, you can get frost bite on exposed skin in about 30 minutes. You don’t want any of that skin exposed out there,” she said. Mayor Michelle Wu said Boston Public Schools would be closed Tuesday because of the temperatures. It is the first time BPS closed for cold since Jan. 7, 2015.“Temperatures are expected to be quite cold with the wind chill and to prioritize the safety of students and, especially given the staffing issues we are seeing in schools and with school bus drivers, we want to make sure there is no risk for students being either out in the cold on the way to school or having issues in school because of the ventilation that is needed with the pandemic with more windows being open throughout each of our school buildings,” Wu said. There is a wind chill advisory in effect from 1 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday for parts of Worcester; Middlesex, Franklin, Hampden, Berkshire and Hampshire counties.
