Car plunges off overpass in Marlborough, catches fire on roadway below
A car plunged off a highway overpass in Marlborough early Friday and caught fire before the driver was rescued, state police said.The vehicle sedan took the ramp from Interstate 290 east to Interstate 495 north when it left the roadway, rode along the jersey barrier for a short distance and went over the jersey barrier. The car became airborne and landed on Route 85 west, which runs below the I-290 ramp. The car landed on the shoulder on the north side of the roadway, hit a rock ledge and caught on fire, police said.Marlborough firefighters responded and extinguished the fire and rescued the driver, a 23-year-old Spencer man, from the car. The victim was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester by medical helicopter. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
