Princess Diana was an international icon and one of the most recognisable figures in the world. Her wedding to Prince Charles remains one of the most popular events in TV history to this day, with more than 750 million people tuning in, and a further 600,000 lining the streets to catch a glimpse of the bride en route to Westminster Abbey. Despite the breakdown of their marriage, Diana remained immensely popular and continued to be one of the most photographed women in the world throughout the Nineties.

After her and Charles’ divorce was finalised in 1996, Diana dated British-Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, but is believed to have ended that relationship in the summer of the following year.

Within a month she began dating Dodi Fayed, the eldest son of billionaire former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed.

Media attention grew immensely once the blossoming romance was confirmed, and Dodi invited Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry to spend time on his father’s 60-metre multi million-pound yacht in the south of France.

It proved to be Diana’s final holiday with her boys before her tragic death in a car crash just a month later.

The trip proved extremely stressful, however, with photographers following their every move.

In the 2007 documentary ‘Diana: Last Days of a Princess’, The Sun’s long-serving royal photographer Arthur Edwards said Diana had decided enough was enough.

He recalled: “Suddenly, she strode down some steps and very rapidly got into a boat.

“I remember picking up the camera and she said, ‘No pictures’.

“It looked like she wanted to speak to us. She came over and said, ‘Why are you here?’”

They replied: “Because you are here ma’am.”

The princess replied: “William’s told me that I should leave England and go and live somewhere else.”

Mr Edwards recalled becoming a little stressed by Diana’s outburst.

William and Kate

He said: “I thought, ‘I don’t want to be the reason why she’s going to live in exile’.”

Mr Edwards said Diana was “tearful” and “obviously upset about something”.

William has been very clear about his desire to “learn from the mistakes of the past” with his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

Royal author Katie Nicholl wrote in her book, ‘Kate: The Future Queen’, that William grew concerned about Kate being constantly photographed while trying to go about her daily life in the early days of their relationship.

Royal experts noted how Kate was ‘very slowly’ introduced to public life. (Image: GETTY)

She wrote: “[William] had seen firsthand how his mother had been harassed by the paparazzi and was determined that Kate not be subjected to the same treatment.”

William went one step further and reportedly invoked EU law on Kate’s behalf.

Former editor of The Sun Kelvin MacKenzie told the recent Channel 5 documentary ‘The Tabloids and the Royals’ that seeing his mother pursued by photographers left “scar” on William.

He said: “He wants to protect [Kate] so he effectively invokes the law, there’s a European Court of Human Rights law saying everybody has a right to privacy.

“And he invoked that on Kate’s behalf.”

Royal commentator Camilla Tominey echoed this: “What was interesting about how Kate was handled in those early days was the sense of trying, very slowly, to introduce her to public life.

“Unlike Princess Diana, who I think felt she was thrown into the deep end.

“I think William wanted to avoid the mistakes of the past, that’s why it was a very, very slow drip-feeding of Kate to the press and to the public.”
