In late 1965, while on vacation in the US, he was a passenger on an Eastern airlines flight which was involved in a mid-air collision outside New York City, and he spent several months recuperating.

He then joined the US Army as a Chaplain, serving until 1980 in Korea, Okinawa, Vietnam, Germany and Japan. He received the Nation Defense service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign and Service Medals (with 3 bronze stars) among many other military decorations.
