Scoreboard: Billerica’s Coyne wins at Freshman-Sophomore Invitational
Billerica sophomore Olivia Coyne won the 55-meter dash, at the MVC Girls Freshman-Sophomore Invitational, Jan. 26 at Andover High.
Coyne simply couldn’t be caught, winning the event in 7.9 seconds. Billerica’s 4X1 lap relay team also got the job done, edging out Andover A and Andover B by a faction of a second at 1:25.2. Nyrah Joseph placed second in the high jump (5-0), while Brianne Phelan place second in the 600M (1:49.3) giving Billerica even more reason to celebrate.
The Red Raiders were also well represented. Lowell’s Sabrina Cady scored second in the mile (5:48). Speedy sophomore Britney Ogiergor took third in the 300 (46.5), a second shy of first place finisher Meghan Rozzi of North Andover. Jackie Pierce also placed third in the 600 (1:54.3).
A pair of Lions placed in the top three of the 55 high hurdles. Chelmsford’s Jill Martin placed second (19.4), with Nicole Arsenault tying for third (10.5). Tewksbury’s Kimsan Nguyen rounded out the local contingent, grabbing second in the 1000 (46.3).
Girls Basketball
Weston 52, Lowell Catholic 38
Lowell Catholic junior captain Catherine Antwi led all scorers with 21 points, but Weston managed to pull away with the win.
The Crusaders trailed by one entering the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats outscored its opponent 20-7 in the frame, to seal the deal in this non-league game at Keith Gymnasium. Charlotte Morey chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds for the Crusaders (3-1 CAC, 3-5 overall).
IHM 39, Trivium 12
The Duffy’s dominated as Immaculate Heart of Mary took down Trivium.
Maureen Duffy and Patti Duffy each scored a team-high 12 points, as the IHM Eagles established a 22-5 lead at halftime.
With the win IHM improves to 4-0, while Trivium falls to 1-6.
Boys Hockey
Tewksbury 2, North Andover 1
Sean Lane and Caden Connors led a third period comeback, as Tewksbury took down North Andover, 2-1, at the Valley Forum in Lawrence.
The Scarlet Knights grabbed the early advantage. Connor Chace scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, off a feed from Brendan Simoneau and Tegan Dolan. Tewksbury (9-0) battled back in the third. Lane netted the equalizer off a set up from Brady Chapman and Tyler Barnes, before Connors buried the game winner roughly five minutes later. Tewksbury outshot its opponent 39-14.
Wrestling
Concord-Carlisle 45, Westford 30
Westford heavyweight Matt Valcourt earned the clearcut 7-1 decision, one of six Grey Ghost grapplers to earn victories over Concord-Carlisle. Shane Clark (170) collected a 7-1 decision, while Dan Hickey (113), Giselle Piedrahita (120), Antony Khvesiuk (132) and Cole Stickel (220), all won by fall.
Girls Swimming
Nashoba 108, TGD 66
Ro Dudevoir won both the 200 IM and 500 free, as the Tyngsboro Groton Dunstable (TGD) girls team lost to Nashoba in its swim meet, Jan. 26 at Greater Lowell Tech. Nashoba improved to 6-3, while TGD fell to 4-5.
Boys Swimming
TGD 97, Nashoba 21
Joseph Wang and Oliver Erz led the way as double winners, as the Tyngsboro Groton Dunstable (TGD) boys team beat Nashoba in its swim meet, Jan. 26 at Greater Lowell Tech.
Wang took top honors in both the 200 IM and 200 backstroke. Erz won the 100 fly and 100 breast. With the win TGA improved to 3-6, while Nashoba fell to 1-8.
