Slick travel conditions ahead for Massachusetts with sleet, freezing rain on Sunday
Slick travel conditions are expected in Massachusetts on Sunday as sleet and freezing rain make their way into the state.The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for northwestern Middlesex County and all of Worcester, Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire counties. Showers began developing in western Massachusetts during the early morning hours, and spread eastward.Freezing rain, sleet and a bit of snow will be falling on roads west of Interstate 495, making them slick. Areas east of I-495 will see rain, as the temperatures will be above freezing.The chance of ice accumulation is likeliest in northern and western Massachusetts.The precipitation continues through the afternoon, but the wintry mix in central Massachusetts will flip over to rain between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. due to increasing temperatures.The rain will continue over southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod through late Sunday night.People driving Sunday night should be cautious of icy roads as temperatures dip back below the freezing point.Conditions are expected to be clear and windy on Monday, while there will be a cold blast of air on Tuesday with wind chill factors near or below zero throughout Massachusetts, even in the afternoon.
